The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a tool used by health professionals to help determine whether a person is a healthy weight.
BMI is calculated by taking a person’s weight and height measurements and using them in the following equation:
BMI = weight/(height)2
It is expressed as kg/m2
What do the BMI ‘numbers’ mean?
- <18.5 kg/m 2 = underweight
- 18.5 – 24.9 kg/m 2 = healthy weight
- 25.0 – 29.9 kg/m 2 = overweight
- >30.0 kg/m 2 = obese
